Kirk Shannon, Law Commission of Canada – Commission du droit du Canada
Kirk is the Director General and Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Law Commission of Canada. He is also a sessional lecturer at the University of Ottawa Faculty of Law, where he teaches trial advocacy.
After completing a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree at Queen’s University in 2002, Kirk graduated from the McGill University Faculty of Law in 2008 (LL.B/BCL). He clerked for the Honourable Madame Justice Louise Charron at the Supreme Court of Canada before completing his LL.M at New York University, where he was a Hauser Global Scholar. Kirk practiced litigation at a global law firm in New York City and then returned to Ottawa to work as counsel for the Privacy Commissioner of Canada. He then joined the Department of Justice Canada as a litigator, representing the Attorney General of Canada before all levels of court in Ontario. He has also worked as a federal crown prosecutor. He became Director General of the Law Commission of Canada in 2023. Kirk is a member of the bar in Ontario, Québec and New York State and has previously served on the board of the Ottawa Arts Council and as chair of the Ottawa Fringe Festival board.
